The vision of Maplewood Forest School is to provide a joyful outdoor education experience for young people which allows them to:

  • Learn about themselves, each other, and the world;
  • Feel good about their achievements and inspired to seek out new challenges at Forest School, in the classroom, and beyond; and
  • Develop a lasting connection to the natural world.

Founder: Jen Mason

Maplewood Forest School was founded in 2010 by Jennifer Taylor Mason. Jen is certified through the Open College Network in the UK as a Level 3 Forest School Practitioner and is the first person in Canada trained as a Forest School leader.

She has a Master's degree in Ecology-Based Education from Prescott College, a Bachelor of Education degree with a focus in Outdoor and Experiential Education from Queen's University, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Queen's University.

She has taken wilderness skills and mentoring courses with Tom Brown Jr.'s Tracking School, Jon Young and Wilderness Awareness School, and Yamnuska Mountain Adventures. In addition, Jen has taken courses in communication, conflict-resolution, and decision-making with ICA Associates and at Conrad Grebel University College. She is trained in first aid.

Jen is a certified teacher and outdoor, environmental educator. Since 1989, she has worked with young people of all ages in Canada, the United States, and Australia leading wilderness trips and teaching about the environment and how we can live sustainably.

She is committed to getting young people outside and into wild landscapes, connecting them with nature, and building a foundation for sustainable living.
